When you work hard during hot and humid weather, it takes a toll on your body. Heat exhaustion is a serious problem, and it is important to recognize the symptoms and know how to prevent it.
Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion Heat exhaustion typically starts with a headache, which is sometimes accompanied by a stomachache. Individuals suffering from heat exhaustion look pale and may feel faint. These are warning signs that you are overheating, and you should see the athletic trainer immediately. It takes 24 to 48 hours to recover from heat exhaustion.
Prevention The best way to deal with heat exhaustion is to prevent it by following these simple steps:
Stay hydrated! It is important to drink plenty of fluids before and all during practices and games to avoid cramping, especially if you are playing both defense and offense and don't come off the field much. Dehydration can cause cramping, which can be very painful. Once you are cramping, it's too late to hydrate; you have to ingest fluids before they're needed.
Up your salt intake a little. When the weather is hot, eat a little salty food along with healthy foods before practices and games. If needed, you can get salt stick tabs from the athletic trainer.
