Concussions
Medfield High School treats concussions seriously, and follows a specific protocol for concussed student athletes. The school nurses and the athletic trainer attend a yearly concussion symposium at Harvard Medical School to stay up-to-date on the latest techniques for concussion management, and they present that knowledge to the faculty and administrators each September.
In the football program, we to try to prevent concussions by teaching players proper tackling techniques, including never leading with the top of the head. All incoming 9th grade football players are given the Impact Concussion Test during the first week of school. In the event that you do receive a concussion, the test provides a baseline to help determine whether you have fully recovered. This test is used along with other evaluations to determine your return to play status.
Any suspected concussions should be reported to the athletic trainer immediately for evaluation. You may not return to play during that game. If you need to see a doctor, the athletic trainer will contact your parents so they can take you to see your doctor.
When you have a concussion, rest is the only cure. Lights and noise will stimulate your brain, make you feel worse, and delay healing, so TV, phone, computers and noise should be avoided. If you are able to attend school, the athletic trainer informs the nurses, guidance and front office of your injury. Accommodations will be made for your return to school, if needed, including a reduced class schedule and extra time to complete homework and exams.
Once your symptoms have completely abated, the athletic trainer will administer both the Impact Test and exertion testing. If you pass, you will be allowed to return gradually to athletics.
If you have questions or concerns about concussions, please contact the school nurses or the athletic trainer.
